Is that not just the design of the later frames? I seem to recall from '93 that the independent collar had been dropped in favour of an integrated pinch bolt, can't see why that wouldn't have been applied to the Ultimate. Edit: Pinch bolt visible in '93 Catalogue...

Yep - often found on early Treks in particular, allowing you to run the outer cable housing right down to it. The cable itself should be retained by a screw/nut on the frame. Many early frames converted to single speed would be lost without this little bit if being converted back to 3x...

A bit like changing the groupset on a bike and calling it a new bike, if a receiver has to change the box due to expansion, is it still technically the same box?🤯
