    Shimano 600 (1980s) v MF-TZ500-6 (2025)

Probably got a funny bearing size. One of the last places that Imperial still lives. 1/8" ball bearing? Non! Trois millimetres.

A drop of chain oil will be a lot better than nothing.

    Shimano 600 (1980s) v MF-TZ500-6 (2025)

Even better, when your maillard freewheel is wearing and loose, you could dismantle it and swap shims around to tighten it up again. There was a drawer of freewheel shims when I started in the shop 95, but they had already fallen out of use, like the sturmey drawer cabinet. I've used a few...

    Shimano 600 (1980s) v MF-TZ500-6 (2025)

With the freewheel locked in "drive", the inaccuracy between sprocket mounting and freewheel bearing is lost - you only get to see the inaccuracy between the sprockets and the hub threads, and in turn the axle. You see some bsos & e-bsos that attempt to change gear every freewheel revolution...

    Shimano 600 (1980s) v MF-TZ500-6 (2025)

Cheap freewheels aren't "square" on the hub, so waver from side to side as they turn. Cheap ebikes get almost no power input from the rider, so a cheap freewheel is all they need, until it rains and then they fail. Big fave: stuffed cheapo freewheel on ebike - power cable through the axle...

    Peugeot atlas all terrain

Peugeots of this period are popular. It's a relatively basic machine from the late 80s, but in really nice condition, you could find it on a catalogue to give it more cachet. Easy sell £100, good sale £200

Is this real? Old Lucas lamp?

You can imagine as you picked up speed on your High Bicycle, the clamp starting to bind, the lamp starts spinning in your wheel, you pick up speed due to the almost total lack of brakes... it only ends one way🤣 I found i couldn't hold the speed down on a penny on a 10% gradient, and had to...

Advice on buying first vintage road bike?

^Spot on. With enough experience, you can feel the tube quality, and hear some character in the ring, but this doesn't give you much idea about manufacturer. The quality of lugwork, frame fittings especially brake bridge and bottom bracket gives a clear idea of build quality, and some...

We had a customer today riding to Greece, and another riding Venice to Croatia with some friends. We were doing some position adjustments. We talked the Venice guy out of buying a new Brooks saddle as he liked the saddle he had already and was setting off to do 100km/day next week! The...

    1998 Orange P7 Tourer/ATB

For longer rides, you want to be balanced between the bars and saddle. This spreads the load across the body, and brings more muscles in to play, reducing stress. And increasing power and efficiency. The pull back bars tabs tend to put most weight on the saddle, make standing on the pedals...

I'd change the bars before worrying about the saddle. You've got fashionable backswept bar shapes there, but after a few hundred miles, they are often gone!
