But going from 7 to 8, 9 or 10 always involves some modification to wheel/freehub, right? Just realized the smallest chainring is the only one that's stuck with crank and for a 1x* conversion I'd probably want to keep the middle one. I believe I'm to anal to go 1x and still keep the two. So...

7 speed bar-end shifters do not seem to exist. Does anybody have experience with 7-speed rear derailleurs and 8-speed bar-end shifters? Will the microSHIFT BS-T08 or Shimano 8-speed ones work well in indexed mode with a 7-speed derailleur (in this case a 1992? Deore LX derailleur)?

I believe I misunderstood your original question. I have the rear mech. It's working. The front mech is not. Or perhaps it is. Previous owner removed (and lost) the screw with a red ring in the below picture (not my picture or mech, Googled something close to what I have) to get the chain out...
