I’m just spending a bit of time building the pivot back up with epoxy. I’m using Permatex Steel Weld metal-loaded epoxy. It looks pretty pro because it’s in a twin tube but, disappointingly, just smells like Araldite with bits in.
Anyway, the old arm had worn a slot in the pivot and I’m...
Great story! What’s the frame? Was going to say Pennine but on a closer look the faded lettering doesn’t actually look like it says that! You should put some bar tape on it though, even if it’s budget cork tape. It’ll make the handlebars way comfier and take a surprising amount of shock out your...
100% agree @Woz about the replacement de-plenishment thing. Certain components (for a lot of bikes) you can still get cheaply and easily, while with others you’re using up a very limited stock of originals. In my case there are either no originals left or, if there are, I’m going to wear them...
Well, there has been an unexpected turn of events. The 3D-printing company offered me a very generous introductory offer which brings this back into play. I've been meaning to try them out for a while for some projects at work, so I've ordered one up to see what I get. Should get it in about 2...
Loads of cool touches on that GF. I like how understated it is. What are the tyres that are on it at the moment? I’m looking for something similar to make my mtb more road-friendly.
I don't have a way of making it nicely myself - but you got me wondering how much it might be get a new one CNC'd or 3D printed. Quick down-and-dirty in Solidworks...
CNC in Al-Cu4Mg similar to duralumin:
3D print in Al-Si10Mg:
The 3D print is quite a bit more expensive than I was...
Stronglight 49D fit on modern Shimano square tapers. They have 50.4mm bcd so you can put pretty much any size chainring on them. I have 48/28 on one set and 54/46 on the other. Both have TA rings. Watch out because they come in both English and French pedal threads!
Lol, yeah I don't want to risk using it because it's paper thin. I think with a half-moon shaped shim bonded into that side it'll be nearly as good as new again.
The good news is the derailleur cleaned up nicely and under the grime it’s in really good mechanical condition:
The bad news is that it’s a completely different size! Digging around the internet, it looks like there were English and French versions of these early Cyclo derailleurs. The...
Potentially yes to all of that. We know that early on English riders weren’t keen on alloy components because they could be fragile compared to steel counterparts. The steel Cyclo could either have been a cheaper model or it could have been the same thing but destined for the UK market?
There’s...
Filthy Cyclo has arrived:
It is indeed filthy and a bit gummed up. I haven’t got the original with me so I can’t do a direct comparison, but this looks like an all-steel version of the one that was on the bike. So it’s got a steel arm, steel nuts and a steel lower jockey wheel instead of an...
Yes, right forum!
Quickest way to date it might be via the Sturmey Archer hub. They have a number stamped into the shell which is the production date. Some just have two digits which is the year, some have four digits which is the month and year...
I used to have a late 30s BSA Sports and this bike is quite similar. I did a lot of detective work on mine so I might as well pass on a bit of that knowledge here. I'm glad you found a Hercules marking because there were a lot of these factory-built Roadster and Sports bikes made by...
Quite a few people on here have had success with them. As long as you put the correct chamfer on the inside of the bb shell I think they’re fine 👍
@Mark Manley if you want some dimensions highonbikes has an eBay store. You’re likely to get a response on there.
