Pump Track Build - 2003 Saracen XESS XTREME

Nice, bet that'll come out lovely - planning on doing a build thread? Even just for cruising around the neighborhood, this sort of bike is super fun - if you've got any pump tracks near you they are definitely worth checking out too.

I bought this Marin in 1997

Great pics! Would never have occurred to me to try a road TT on a MTB, though with long low stem I can kind of see it! The knobby tyres must have made an interesting noise at those speeds on tarmac 😂

Pump Track Build - 2003 Saracen XESS XTREME

Popped out for a chilled cruise around in the sun this evening. Found a little double in one of my local parks and managed to clear it - normally a big mental block of mine (though to be fair this one was mighty un-intimidating, and the pic might well be cropped so you can't see how close the...

I bought this Marin in 1997

Lovely Marin! I was about the same age as you must have been when you bought it, when I got my first MTB - another 1997 Marin - about 10 years ago. Been on plenty of adventures since. They're cracking bikes!

That old 27.5 in 26 debate

I've personally going that if you're riding off road in the mud, and cornering vigorously, or landing drops/jumps with a bit of side load from time to time, you need a decent amount of clearance between the tyre and chain stays. I've tried a couple of 27.5 rear wheels on 26" frames that looked...

Marin Mount Vision Tour of Dartmoor

As long as you're not chucking them down black graded DH trails, they are still great bikes today, I'm sure you'll enjoy yours. Get some pics and a ride report up on here!

    Planet X Jack Flash classic

Nice, good luck with the auction!

    Planet X Jack Flash classic

I also wonder if it's worth looking at 24" jump bike frames... Though not sure if 24" wheels would be utterly horrible on rough trails on a hardtail.

    Planet X Jack Flash classic

I built up a Saracen xess last year and it's been amazing for the local pump tracks and skate parks. It's also extremely short in the top tube (it's the only MTB frame I've ever experienced toe overlap on). If you're really struggling to find a short enough frame, might be worth giving one a...

    Very shiny! Love it 😎

    Planet X Jack Flash classic

Should make a really fun trails bike! I had a GT Chucker years ago that filled a similar role, not quite small enough for the pump track but definitely smaller than you'd want for long XC rides - it was great fun in the woods!

    Planet X Jack Flash classic

Yeah that's going to look well nice! What sort of riding have you got planned for it?

Love those massive Tioga DH saddles! Looking forward to seeing how this one turns out 😎

Really appreciate the advice @novocaine btw!

Pump Track Build - 2003 Saracen XESS XTREME

Never heard it explained quite that way before but makes total sense. Cheers for the tip, I'll have a play with that. There is a small double on one of the XC trails I ride regularly that I can clear on a good day - it takes a good bit of physical oomph as well as mental commitment. On steep...

Pump Track Build - 2003 Saracen XESS XTREME

Another little edit from a session at one of the Bristol pump tracks. Pretty pleased with how it all looks on the pump track, the less said about the jump line the better. I know what I should be doing, but my lizard brain kicks in and tells my firmly that I'm not doing that in case I get too...

Pump Track Build - 2003 Saracen XESS XTREME

Cheers for the tips! Sounds like I'm more or less on the right track with what I'm *trying* to do on the little transition jump. Just need to get enough reps in that it's no longer intimidating to give it a bit of pop rather than sucking it up. If I manage to find a slightly bigger stair set...
