The cartridge will come out of the cup, couple of taps on the end of the axle with a soft mallet is usually enough. :)

I like the RaceFace taperlock and Royce at the blingier end of things but in reality you can't go wrong with a UN-71/72 or the Tange LN-7922 as mentioned above. Aside from a few grams in weight, they both last for ages and are relatively cheap. The Royce/Raceface do have easily replaceable...

Trying to fit a 26.4mm race on a 27.0mm fork? I really can't think of another reason it'd crack/split. Split races only work with cartridge bearings or if there's a separate steel race for loose bearings to ride on. :)

I used lock ons for a long time, then realised that no plastic sleeve gives more room for rubber/foam = More comfortable. I'll deal with a little more ball ache for that. I swap bars around a lot. Allen key down the grip and a squirt of the never ending Lynx Africa supply, works every time.
