How much would you expect to pay for a chainset and BB to be removed and fit another BB and chainset, both supplied by the customer & not bought in that LBS?

I'm not wanting a debate on DIY Vs LBS for repairs & fitting of parts, just curious as to what you would expect to pay for such work.

Depends how much adjustment is required afterwards.

Could be necessary to readjust front mech
Threads may need chasing.
Maybe a good idea to face BB shell too?

Also the fact that the shop didn't earn anything on the parts can also mean they are less inclined to give you a generous workshop rate.

Won't quote danish prices on here as they are pretty irrelevant for this topic though.

The chainset to be removed, did it come off clean? Did the BB slip off or did it need soaking etc and a bit of muscle to remove?
New stuff should slip on I guess but did the workshop clean and regrease the BB threads, maybe chase the shell too?

A simple on and off should take a few mins so you would have thought £20-£25, but there are so many unforeseens.

I was gonna guesstimate at £20-25. LBS officially charges £15 for the BB & £12 for the chainset (ex-VAT).

To be honest - if they're getting a BB/Chainset change from me, it's gonna be a toughy - e.g. sorting out the BB shell after some un-named dufuss  partially crossed threaded the non-drive side on a steel frame.

I'd also put having trust and confidence in they guys and gals at the shop above the actual price (high or low) - as with many people on retrobike, some of my bikes are way more important to me than mere cost could measure.

Also, the irregular supply of workshop biscuits always seems to help. :-)

Having not used an LBS for anything sinse I were a lad I'm out of tune with charges, but I would presume most are based on an hourly rate of £x and then divided down to the job time.

Bear in mind car dealer's hour rates are well into 3 figures nowadays I would expect a (good reputation) LBS to charge around £50-60 per hour.

So a 20-30 minute remove and replace BB and cranks (assuming no issues) would come out at £20-30.

assuming no problems doing the job, if the parts supplied by the customer were mail order bought i think most shops would charge more than the normal £20-ish, if the parts were just stuff he had that he wanted to swap around between bikes then it's the normal labour for the time taken.

i say this meaning that the shop, if supplying parts, would charge less or no labour as they make some money on the parts but if they aren't getting the mark up on the parts they'll charge more for their time/tools/knowledge than they usually would . . . and i don't blame them.

halfords do a bike care plan
£20 for a years worth of labour

although it would be upto the individual mechanic or whatever to charge you more for the parts not being from there
i.e if you want everything on your bike changing for the stuff you bought online - for £20
