What year? S-Works

I bought this off a friend about 9-10 years ago, it's freakin ace to ride, XC-DH

I'm just trying to work out how old the bike is before I do a build sheet in the Readers MTB's, I think its about 1998?
I've had a look in the usuall places for frame numbers but there isn't anything? (I might just be blind?)
It only has Specialized and M2 written on it.

I'll take some better pics this weekend



p.s I've just opened a parcel and its got my new 2nd hand Intense Tracer frame, cant wait to build it up.

The frame number is inside the LH rear dropout on mine....I would also like to know how to decipher it as I'm unsure of the age of mine.....begins with a 7, does that make it '97?

Yeah, thats a 97 I believe, in 96 it had blue highlights rather than black.
96 and 97 were the years they had the 'team' S Works.
The numbers inside the left dropout.
I have the code for the S Works and for example my 96 S Works starts with 96S4M..............
96 = Year
S= S works
4 = month of build
M= where it was built
and the rest of the numbers are the build numbers.
Will double check when I get in but pretty sure thats how it goes. This works with all my previous S works as well.

Judging by the colour of the decals.

I have the same size (that's 15.5" right?) in Mango. Mine isn't an S-Works though.

I'd love a red one.

My setup is really similar too. Z2s, Azonic 2.5 riser, stem. Feels like a big BMX.

Ive just been out with a tape measure, I always believed it was a 16.5" but it's a 15.5", I've only owned it for nearly 9 years
Before I had this one I had a stumpy in the light blue with pace R32s

They Handle so well, I'll try and get a build sheet done soon

It's interesting that you find it handles so well, because it was designed for a much shorter Manitou SX fork and flat handlebars, which would give very different handling than you have with that set up. I think it's just a tribute to the quality of both the excellent frame and that excellent Z1 fork that it can give such good results in two very different modes.

I did a small stint at Halfords bike hut while I was inbetween jobs. A customer bought a kona 08 hardtail, can't remember what model it was tho, it was running 4-5" forks, we measured the angles and tube lengths, it was identical to the M2

I'm 5.11" the Spesh is my only bike so it get used for XC and mild DH, often showing the full suspension boys how it's done. I've been asked to sell the bike loads but it's like an old pair of jeans
