Fork steerer replacing

Looking for recommendations where can I get Fork steerer tube replaced in UK and what sort of money am I looking to spend? Got a French standard one with slightly damaged top of steerer threads + there's only 5mm of thread anyway so thinking of replacing the whole steerer. Is there a way to do it that doesn't damage the paint work? Many thanks for any help🙏

You will need a framebuilder - essentially they have to melt the braze and remove the old steerer, then fit a new one. Alternatively, some might remove the top of the steerer and braze on a new extension. In this second case you will probably not have to repaint.
Have a look here: https://www.framebuilding.com/custom_uk_bicycle_framebuilders.htm

Alternatively if you have a good old fashioned bike shop they may have a local builder they work with.

Cut the tube below the threads and have someone weld on the top from another fork, to any length you like, I have done it a number of times in my own garage to lengthen and shorten forks to my needs. Here is one I shortened, took 5/8" out and put it back together. Bevel the edges after making sure they are square, I welded it up with a gas-shielded mig. Now it is all steel as original and strong. This is a Reynolds 531 fork out of an old race bike, I actually took 5/8" out of the entire bike !!!

With a weld on a steerer to ensure a proper join NDT Dye Penetrant or MPI would be advisable for safety’s sake as if this suddenly gives way on a downhill for instance it could be catastrophic for the rider…..
