Retrobike Rider
Hi folks.......

I'm running my clockwork in frankenbike form at the minute, in a road biased set up with road brake levers pulling xt canti's. The problem is I don't have a barrel adjuster on the brakes to take up mild cable stretch and for a bit of slack for wheel removal.......

Has anyone a positive experience in using a barrel adjuster set up halfway down the cable outer, and if so any links to what you used on eBay etc?........

Thanks........daz

Truth be told, I don't find I need to use the barrel adjustor to undo the straddle, and remove the wheel.

Even with the most abrasive mud, I haven't found them needed during a ride.

I do find it easier to set the cable clamp then wind it back in, but in real terms, are you really losing much in not having them, that's worth Heath-Robinson-ing a kludge?

And what's the term, again, for morphing a word / phrase into a verb?

Inline gear adjusters don't generally work too well even with the minimal loads from a mech spring, unless you spend serious money. (Jagwire have some decent ones)

Relying on them when you are trying to haul yourself down from 40+ in a hurry....... No thanks.

You can usually get brake hangers with the correct threaded adjusters. Or use an adjuster from a brake lever, plus an m5 (?) nut to fit to a normal, unthreaded hanger. (Try SJS Cycles)

And if you need to use an adjuster to unhook the straddle cable, I'd be looking at the set up of your brakes. Or the parts you've used to make it work.
