Campag chainset

half cog

Senior Retro Guru
Hi.
I use Shimano but have been gifted this campy chainset. It is 172.5 cranks and9/16x20 and has 39/53 campy rings.Too high gearing for my old legs around sunny Nidderdale so may as well go.Has heel rub and some fine scratches . Teeth are fine. Please would some kind soul who knows about campag tell me what I have got and roughly what it should be worth as I honestly dont have a clue. Shimano yes but not campy.
Many thanks
Regards
Peter

Re:

Hi, that's a late 80s C Record crank.
Have a look at eBay for recently sold prices.
I would like the 39T ring though,
Richie

Re:

Hi Richie
Many thanks for that.I really dont want to split it at this stage but will keep your interest in mind. There is no way I can use it. I have a cat 1 climb to get to my best riding area and at 70 thats a non event with those gears. Thanks you again for your help. Tis most appreciated

Corsa Record or C Record is considered by many to be the finest looking crank set Campag ever made. This is the 2nd generation with painted on logo and would have been available from late 80s to mid 90s. Good to see it retains the self extracting crank bolts. The rings do not look original and are probably not of Campag manufacture. They would have been probably 52/42T but have been changed to the current style of 53/39T. If there is wear left in the rings and tapers and pedal threads are good and accepting that there is rub on the crank sides, I think you should be looking at £50/60.

Re:

I think you might have taken too quick a look there Apple Tree. The rings say brev campagnolo -AS- so they are the right ones.

Also, those are the later 8mm crank bolts, not the self extractors. You need a left hand threaded crank extractor to remove those cranks.

Gosh, you have good eyes ! Just looking at the original picture I cannot read Campag on them at all but with a big zoom in and my glasses on I can see you are right. Even more worth the money !
You are correct in that you need a Campag reverse thread extractor if self extractors are not available. So many of these cranks get the threads damaged by some one forcing in a conventionally threaded extractor. Might be useful for half cog to check that they are sound before passing on.

Re:

Hi.
The threads look o.k. to me but as said It was gifted to me so I have never had it on a bike and I dont have a campag extractor to try and thread in.Rings are brev campag as are the chinring bolts apart from the one that screws in from the back. That one was missing so its been renewed but not with a campag one. There are no real signs of it being removed with brute force.Ie hammer and whatever you can find in the workshop so I presume it was removed with the correct extractor. You would not stand much chance of removing a chainset with a cross threaded extractor as you would write the threads off on the way in.The bolts are not self extractors. Many thanks for all the interest.Oh by the way. If I dont have c record then what do I have? This is a whole different world to my stuff.

Peter

It is C-Record: as said above, 2nd generation ('88-'94) which has a silk-screened logo halfway down the arm, as opposed to 1st gen, which had an engraved logo further up.

As has also been said the crank bolts aren't original (they are from 1995 or later) and should be self-extractors.

The chainrings are likely original: they're certainly Record, or the chain-catcher pip wouldn't be correctly located behind the crank arm. I can't see any timing marks on them, so they pre-date Exa Drive which was introduced in 1994. 53/39 was always offered as an option, even when 52/42 was standard (up until 1990 I think).

On the reverse of the arms is a two digit number in a square: this is a date code. Unfortunately there is no absolute certainty as to how this is interpreted: usually understood as the first digit representing the year of manufacture and the second being the quarter of the YOM.

Re:

Thanks for all the info. When I get some spare time I will sort out what to do with them.Meanwhile thanks again. At least I now know what I they are
