Chainring conundrum.

Hi, I have a 1994 vintage MTB which is bring built up as a bit of a road rider/ commuter bike, I have modern Deore shifters and mechs but have not yet got a chainset sorted for it.
The current bottom bracket is a UN51 iirc, square taper type.

Ideally I'd like more road oriented chainrings, perhaps even just double chainrings.
What is easier/better? Fit an MTB chainset and change the rings? Can I still get 50T rings for a MTB?
Or can I fit a road chainset? I've seen a few that fit square taper cranks? I understand the distance between chainring bolts (BCD?) is different to that of MTB chainsets? But that shouldn't be an issue as it should come with chainrings attached anyway eg 52,42T

I'm looking to do this on the cheap as it's going to be a winter hack bike, but obviously things need to be compatible.

Thanks.

If you're buying the rings anyway and yes you can get them if you're in ATB 110BCD 5 arm land as you could fit the road compact rings.
