Deore LX shifter not working

Spray with WD40 and get a tiny screw driver under the part circles and raise/lower it. Even better if you can spray it at the same time. Just did mine yesterday. It definitely isn’t broken.

That looks a lovely bike, had one when new, it’s a springy frame and light wheels so it flys!!! Tyres look good but ride awful in my opinion.
Surprisingly light.

Had another go. Inside was /is clean as a whistle.

This time I lifted the whole mechanism out of the plastic and removed the cable.

Played around a little and hey presto everything is clicking and pulling cables like it should.

Fixed!

Made my day. Thank all.

...now, what was somebody saying about now squirting white grease in?

White grease spray.... somebody recommend i should now lube the shifters (after all that WD40 / GT85

But after a quick Google, some seem to say white grease can harden and clog up things like shifters.

What to do for the best?

Good point. It seems if the shifters are in regular use there is not a problem but being stored and not used causes issues.

I tend to just use GT spray which is a lubricant and have not had any recurring problems.

I race cyclo-cross and for years I was spraying wd40 or gt85 onto things like cables, canti brakes, headsets and derailleurs after cleaning.

However I now know these sprays strip away grease.

So, is there a spray that repells moisture, offers a little lubricant and isn't detrimental to things like bearings?

Light oil is better for bowden cables - grease is higher Friction and doesn't flow much.
I would save grease for components you are assembling and then want to leave undisturbed for a while - headsets, bb, hubs.

Oil is better for "little and often" - so I squirt a little light oil into shifter mechanisms once in a while, or if they've been stored.

Oil flows more readily, so reaches remote parts faster.

If you've lubricated, you're 95% there.
People argue about brand, density...

Thick sticks, thin flows.

Spray grease often has a solvent to make it flow initially.
Hard to find without toxic forever- chemical ptfe mind.
