Looking for some tyres - any recommendations?

As per title I am looking for some tyres - I know nothing about them, i.e what tread to have, etc. All I know is mine are looking a bit bald.

If I say what I want them for, I was wondering if someone could recommend me some and point me in the right direction?

I do ride on the road - evening type rides, typically 10-20miles. (Knobbly bits have never really bothered me, I am a slow rider anyway).
I also ride off road. I try to avoid the mud but the damn stuff is always there.

I am also going to be Mountain Mayhem next month so I suspect more mud!

I need front and rear.

I use either Panaracer Fire XC Pro, or Kenda Nevegal (DTC out back & StickE up front)

Both are very good all rounder tyres & a decent weight (not too light to be puncture prone & not too heavy to be a drag)

Maxxis Crossmarks are great if you avoid the mud. Nice and grippy on rocks, trails and hardpack and fast too. Great for a few miles on the road as well without the tractor tire effect.
You can't get them in amberwall though, they're just too damn modern...

you want more tread up front . slightly narrower on the rear if you cant match the width with the front . lower pressure in the front than the rear . when a tyre lets go you want it to be the rear , having the front slide results with you hitting the ground like a sack of shit . an over inflated rear will go first and thats controllable

for me there are only 3 tyres . slick , knobbly and wide spaced knobbly for the mud

at the moment i have a specialized purgatory 2.2 on the front , standard knobblie and on the rear a crappy old semi slick thats bald . i too have to ride road to get to the dirt and anything fancy would just wear out . my weight is far over the rear tyre so the front isnt wearing too bad , rears dont last me very long though . when its muddy again i have my eye on a new schwalbe for the front

besides the price. It says steel bead so I am guessing the merlin ones aren't folding and the benefit of folding ones being they are lighter? :? Would you really notice 200g or so though?

Panaracer Cinder, hard wearing, roll ok, pretty good in mud and won't wear out too quickly on tarmac.

And if you want to go cheap they do a 'sport' version which is £15 less and not much heavier.

apart from the wire/folding bead the difference is that the folding bead has a higher thread per inch count on the weave, which means a more supple tyre which will grip more as it conforms to the terrain better.

You will notice 200g on the wheels, less rotational mass = better acceleration & handling.

Personally (unless on a budget) I'd get the folding ones.

The Panaracer Cinder is a 'newer' design than the Fire XC and having used both I'd go for the Cinder in all conditions.
