A mate of mine in France just picked up this F.W. Evans frame and we're trying to figure out more about it. He's pretty much in the dark about when it was made or what model it might be.
From what I understand, F.W. Evans was founded by Frederick William Evans in South London back in the 1920s. They built a solid reputation for quality frames, especially touring and randonneur models during the 1970s-80s. They were particularly known for using Reynolds 531 tubing (which this frame has).
What we know:
- It's an F.W. Evans frame with Reynolds 531 tubing
- Frame size is 63x58cm (axis to axis)
- Has a brazed insert on the right side of the fork (apparently for a rack?)
- Has some unique cable guides
- The frame has the F.W. Evans sticker on the down tube
- Head tube has what appears to be a reissue badge
What we're trying to find out:
- Any idea on the year this was made?
- What model it might be?
- Any info on this specific frame design (randonneur/touring?)
- What the brazed insert on the fork was designed for
- Thoughts on a period-correct build for this beauty
My friend is especially keen on doing a historically accurate restoration and would love any catalog references or examples of similar builds if anyone has them.
