I have a totally original aforementioned Raleigh Highlander from around 1992/'93 at the latest.
Not a top range bike by any means.
Owned since new, seldom ridden.
Heavyweight steed.
Should I (hate the phrase) punt it and invest in something lighter and more responsive for the wife, or do it up nice enough to ride and make her work hard at the climbs? (and flats tbh).
Any and all replies gratefully recieved.

Dave.

Depends on whether you want her to shed a few pounds or not. It could be like telling her she was fat with out her knowing.

Appreciated. It IS a bag of old spanners, but she would know...
It will I'm sure see out whats left of our glorious Scottish summer then end up being donated to the first kid that shows an interest.

Give it a good clean and oil. Make sure that the cables are all slick, grears are shifting smoothly. Clean and oil the chain well and strip and re-grease the wheel bearings. It'll ride well enough. If she gets into riding then you can get her something fancy, if it just sits there un ridden will she really ride something fancier?

Tnega, tomorrow you wll see a Raleigh Alaska take on the Pentlands for the second time. Approx same age, heavey steel etc as the Highlander, in short a capable machine. No point replacing unless your better half shows real interest in bikes.

Understood.
Thing is she rode the Mission and she thought that was lively.
Looking forward to tomorrow tho.
Come on the rigids.

Dave.
