Old School Hero
Hi all
A bit of a question I have a set of these cranks (see pic not mine just used pic as example) sorry do not know the model number but I want to use them for a single speed is there anything thing I can do as you don’t seem to be able to remove the outer ring. Do I remember seeing a different spider available for these cranks on this site or was I dreaming!!!!! Or do I see if anybody who would like to swap has something more suitable for conversion.
Regards
Tony

try the swappsies route - to put you out of your misery:

1997+-+DEORE+LX.jpg

I bought a set of FC-M739s. The number is stamped on the back of the arm. Mine came with completely donald ducked rings, then I found it was near on impossible to find the large rings; obviously the day after I gave them[yes gave] away a new ring turned up on here and in a few weeks several sets turned up on ebay.
I didn't realise at the time that there was also a FC-M569, the M569 5 bolt adapter is CHEAPER

im after a crankset like that and would happily swap my deore crank arms complete with a dmr ring and / or the dmr chain aligner thing with bb and bottom wheel.

Options are.

1) Take of the granny, cut the V of the outer ring spider and use the 4 arm middle ring for your S/S ring, which should work well. (or grind the outer ring teeth and use it as a bash ring

2) Take the spider off, you'll need the correct tool Middleburn/Shimano ISIS/M950 Bottom bracket tool does the job. It look similar to this

Price varies on manufacturer/Supplier 5 to 7 quid should do it.

-a) Fit a 5 arm spider, someone might sell one or have some cranks LX/XT (M569/739) with one. Probably cheaper than buying new. even better if the arms are knackered as you're buying a new crank then really ;)
It'll be 110BCD

-b) Fit a 4 arm spider form STX MC40 it's the modern 4 bolt setup, so rings a plenty.

-c) the next gen of XT/LX spiders might fit and might be Compact 5-arm... cannot remember, so do a search)

3) Find if a manufacturer makes S/S rings for them, I know some US one did them for M95x XTR but the spider fixing is very slightly different, check if they fit.
