What am I doing wrong with this XTR M900 headset

Hi helpful people,

Got a NOS M900 in 1inch flavour. When assembling the thing I can't get the plastic washer and the O-ring to seat properly for the top or the bottom. I am placing the washer with the inside lip pointing up on first followed by the O-ring. That is how i am reading the expolded axo assembly diagrame. See the pic for my results. The washer is like a popping out like an old man's hernia. The washer is just marginally larger than the cups. Have flipped it over the other way with worse results. What am I doing wrong?

It's not the right seals?

It should sit in the crown race as it is machined same at the top. All nearly and easily.

Crown race - plastic bit in first flat bit resting on the race. Oring sat in that with the plastic L cradling it

Only in that it stops the upper cup tightening as you tighten the nut by giving it something to move against.... and prob to stop you mashing threads by tightening the two together way too tight...

Hadn't though of the wrong size seals as FluffyChicken suggests. the box was open??? :|

Have put up the pics. What do people think? Thew pics show the result as assembling as per FluffyChicken discription.
