Why 'STEEL IS REAL' - the science bit!

Discussing knowledge isn't plagiarism. Copying and pasting something from Rivendell's website and passing it off as your own is.

I have never heard of RIVENDELL. I remember reading about this tubing fact is a magazine a while ago and as I keep them, I have now dug it out. FYI, the article that educated me about steel tubing, and is based on my memory of reading that, was written by a steel frame designer called GRANT PETERSON. So its now looking like Rivendell may have commited plagiarism on Grant Peterson's article and in a way, because I had remembered it from when I read it, so have I in effect!

...........well when all is said and done, if one reader now goes out a tries a steel bike and loves it, myself, Rivendell and Grant should all be pleased because we all just love steel and want to get more people riding on it!

Science? I think even Edexcel would hesitate at awarding a pass for this.

'Suburbanreuben' I await your 'Edexcel National Curriculum Assessment Standard' lecture on what makes a quality steel bike feel so good with pleasure. As an ameteur at bike building, I am always willing to gain more knowledge from the professional bike building elite.

A quick search of this forum will reveal far better explanations than I could give.

I have to be honest it's all about tube design and a bunch of factors other than "is it made out of xxxxx" I own bike frames made out of every common material (Ti, CF, Steel, Alu) and I find that it depends heavily on how it was designed and manufactured, if it's good or bad XXXX.

Good Steel > cheap CF
Cheap Steel < Good CF
you get the idea.... insert good and bad any other material and it fits the same.

DON'T Think I don't appreciate steel either. I absolutely love my Steve Bauer Boreas prototype, made out of Columbus SLX steel. It's one of the most comfortable bikes I own, but I don't account that to the fact that it's made out of steel. It just has a comfortable geometry and won't rattle your fillings out. I appreciate high end steel very much, and I love how resilient it is. Steel is a major part of human history.

SO in summary, I think it's narrow minded to attribute a magical ride to OH IT's MADE OUT OF XXXX because honestly, you can make an amazing frame out of a LOT of materials, even bamboo.

I am however a fan of high quality manufacturers, and favor certain brands like most people favor their favorite soccer team (football for you blokes?)

Also don't get me wrong, the right steel frame can be magical. I'm still tempted to make an offer on my neighbor's Tomassini and Serrota, both are steel, and very real.

Very true. A good frame builder can make a bike out of just about anything. Steel has an advantage in that there are hundreds, if not thousands, of different diameter/gauge/profile/alloy pipes available, with numerical data describing their properties , from which to tailor a frame to a specific purpose or customer.
It's Art and Science.

Thats a very valid point. Love the quote that a quality frame is a combination of 'Art and Science'.

OK 'suburbanreuben' you must understand that on all forums, some people know everything, while others join to learn and share what they know. I am a humble person and fall into the latter catagory. I recently became a steel tube addict after 19 years of riding aluminium, titanium and carbon framed bikes and thus looked into what made a quality steel frame 'feel' so good. I have since read loads of articles from my archive of magazines to find out and was amazed at how thin the butted tubing was on high quality steel frames to give it that certain 'feel' and 'flex' required. I have since learned from one awesome posting on here that a Columbus Cyber top tube on a Kilauea is a 28.6 x 7-4-7 (yes ONLY 0.4mm thick in the centre of the tube! :shock: ), which is news to me and a very valid amazing contribution. I personally think that this IS a very valid 'science' fact that not everyone was aware of, myself included.
