Utter bool ox STW article

Its actually a little less than I expected, and my expectations are low Anthony. Saying bikes an the rides we did in the 90s were rubbish compared to rides you can have now, is quite frankly, crap.

Given they have previously commented on the old stuff in a more balanced way, as above, think just poor lazy journalism

booo

Any publication is driven by the advertising - no ad's, no magazine...

Singletrack is one the better mag's but they still have make money to keep their advertisers happy, hence the bias towards what's current.

Retrobikers spend most of their hard earned on secondhand parts, not expensive new stuff - we're a niche group that not many moneymen are interested in...

We should be sponsored by eBay...

That reminds me, I need to send the Guvnor some words about Privateer 4 (on sale 17 July, if I may be so bold ;) )

They are all fun. Why can't they just face facts??

[mode="cynic"] Because new bike and accessory manufacturers bring them a lot more advertising revenue than they'd get from promoting crappy old ones?[/cynic]

in one of the recent MBR mags it went something like ''...while the 2011 Stumpjumper was in for repair, I went out on our 2009 Stumpy test bike... I lost all confidence in this old bike and crashed at the first berm...''

or something like that

der....

Ha! Try '99...
Having a chin wag in work about the remote adjustable seat pins that cost a bit and I asked why they would need one. The answer was "i keep falling off on steep descents". I thought "eh? Don't you slide your backside over the seat and tuck the saddle up into your chest?". Apparently that technique is not known...

I think that was the one that also said that hardtails were only good for going to the shops and riding towpaths.
It must amaze them that I manage to survive dropping down a kerb on my rigid singlespeed.

I used to get annoyed with magazines for constantly trying to convince you this is the new that etc, until I realised that when you pay someone to have an opinion and write a review of a product, they won't have a job if they just say "Errm yeah, it's alright, I couldn't really tell the difference" which, lets be honest is what most of us would say!!!

As has been mentioned before, bike companies pay the magazines thousands in advertising and if they don't write something supposedly meaningful, they won't bother paying the money for advertising. On a slightly different note look how Rover tried to stop Top Gear reviewing their cars because they were crap and Top Gear said so!!!

Unfortunately, saying 15yo bikes that you can buy from ebay for £200 are just as good as £4000 brand new carbon fandango bikes, isn't going to help shift any more new bikes is it!
