Utter bool ox STW article

Something else I've noticed is that lots of these kinds of debates just descend in to 'modern is good old is bad' or vice versa (with, I must add, quite a few people here liking both - quite rightly) BUT surely you have to talk quality as well. A cheap modern bike is going to be crap, just like an old cheap bike would have been. So if the comparison is modern cheap bike vs an old top end bike then I'd rather ride top end old every time (Ferrari 250GTO or modern fiesta?) BUT if it comes down to modern top end then yeah, it probably is going to be technically better - but it all depends, as I said before, on what you want it for doesn't it? :)

There isnt really a decent analogy for cycling, you cant compare old bikes like you can old cars.

Theres so much input from the rider whereas the reverse is offered from new technology in cars. Cars are about passenger, pedestrian safety and technology whereas very little legislation features in the cycling world.

A competent rider will out perform most.

The failures of carbon and aluminium frames seems to be as bad as ever,

In the past four months, how many broken carbon mtb frames have you dealt with?

about six MTB, 3 road and one ti frame.

*From memory:

2 Whytes, a Moda, a Willier Imperiale, , Condor ti track bike, a Kona Hei Hei

The road carbons have been failures at the BB area, the BB insert twisting and cracking the carbon frame, some impact failures from the bike being dropped. Fork drop out failures, swing arm failures. Shock mounts coming away.

Genuinely interested (as I own two carbon frames), how many of those failiures were down to the fact that they were carbon and how many were just because the riders did stupid things?

Carbon frames need more care, proper torquing of bolts etc and I can't help but feel that many failiures of carbon parts are just down to stupid user errors.
